The Undertones second album, Hypnotised, was released in April 1980. Produced by Roger Bechirian, it reached #6 in the UK, the band’s highest charting LP.

Hypnotised was recorded at Wisseloord Studios in the Netherlands, December 1979, and Eden Studios, London in January 1980. Only barely less perfect than the group’s debut album, it contains 14 punky pop classics, with a slightly tougher and musically more sophisticated edge than the unfailingly sweet-natured debut.

Packed with more flawless slices of adolescent frustration, the album includes the top ten single ‘My Perfect Cousin’ from March 1980 and ‘Wednesday Week’, which reached UK #11 three weeks later.

In terms of chart sales, 1980 was the Undertones' most successful year. In a review by Sounds magazine the same year, the Undertones were described as "Possibly the best pop group in the English speaking world”. A May 1980 Billboard review described the album as "A sprightly collection of 15 short and punchy songs that convey a sense of humour, catchy melodies and lyrics that stand out above your average rock fare", and noted that "the vocal intensity gives the songs their streetwise urban kick and the biting guitar riffs cushion the lyrics with the kind of support that calls attention to each song."
